RE USE OF BACKLAND GARDEN SITE

Hinton Wood is located adjacent to the coastal town of Highcliffe and Christchurch, just at the edge of the New Forest National Park. Studio : B.A.D Architects were commissioned to undertake a detailed feasibility study to create two new dwellings in an existing back garden, looking to maximise the value of the property.

The architectural design strategy has been to create two invisible high-quality semi-detached flat roofed houses on an underused piece of garden land close to the heart of village, with an overriding view to keep these dwellings very low in height to minimise the impact to the surrounding area. The new houses have been carefully positioned, they are south facing to maximise solar gain and have access to a private courtyard which is also south facing to create a tranquil sun trap.

The form, material and detailed composition of the development has evolved through extensive research into the local vernacular, materials have been selected to reference those found locally, adding texture and a feeling of quality to the buildings. Improved landscaping and planting between the proposed new houses and existing developments will also aid visual screening and improve resident’s amenity.
